More recently, I have been working with Louis on a personal project of his – Measuring the Differential Settlements of High Speed Rails. This was originally a science project that was submitted by Louis to his school. It involves an innovative method to measure the differential settlement of high-speed rails.  I admit that it initially took me awhile to grasp the concept and idea of this project, but I soon realized the amazement involved when Louis, a junior high student, brainstormed and hypothesized the possibilities of creating a newer, safer, and economical method of measurement. He thought through the dangers and risks of high-speed rails not having faster and immediate methods to measure differential settlements. He even realized how harmful this could be for daily passengers of the rails.

We began our personal tutoring sessions by preparing for the speech and science competition at Louis’s school. The speech competition was to be held in complete English. After winning 2nd place at his school science fair, Louis moved on to become a participant in the 2012 Google Science Fair. We worked together on translating the entirety of his project from Chinese to English. From there, Louis was contacted by Google to do a short film that is soon to be featured on the Web. Google was interested in how their search engine was helpful in Louis’s research project from the start. Louis shared what an amazing opportunity the filming process was! His project was submitted on April 1st, and we at PEI only hope the best for him!

Our next step with Louis will be to work with him on submitting an article to a highly renowned science magazine – Nature. This latter assignment is the most challenging of all, since it requires an abundance of scientific terminology, calculations, and procedures that are not typically taught in English class. However, with Louis’s prior knowledge and English skills, he is able to describe and explain certain aspects of his project to me in order for me to translate into formal English. It’s safe to say that we’ve made quite a swell team during the entire process thus far. Several times during our sessions, Louis claimed, “My level of English isn’t that great” and, “Well, I’m only a junior high student,” – but between you and me, I think he’s just being modest!

後記: Theresa老師的文章在我們部落格上刊登一個多月之後，吳承儒同學的故事順利的被Google搬上了Youtube小銀幕; “高鐵上的小科學家，" 大家是這樣開始認識他的。他的科學天地，正透過著英文，做著各種無限可能的探索呢!

地位猶如大學聯考的大學指考（大學指定科目考試），writing（英文作文）20分的大題，似乎是台灣考生的the weakest link（最弱的一環），近幾年都有近兩成考生交白卷。滿分者不過「數一數二」，連續幾年掛蛋者迭創新高，今年更破兩萬人。其實，即使是國文作文，滿分者也同樣是數一數二，通常有七、八百位考生拿零分。

通常英文作文考4-8分的人數最多，約佔十萬考生的四成。相對的，中文作文也以12-16分的區間最主流，約有近半考生落於此區。因此，如果連中文母語作文也頂多拿12-16分，那麼英文分數低落可想而知。

為何作文是台灣考生的罩門？

作English writing的機會跟會話同樣頻繁。例如托福、IELTS、全民英檢，各種英檢考試都必然要考。出社會後，寫business letter，email，MSN，更處處都是英文寫作！

通 常學生雖然已經學了多年英文，但是日常生活中使用、接觸英文的機會極少。包括閱讀、寫作的機會都屈指可數，英文的語言基礎不足。包括對很多簡單事物的描述 都不清楚，例如「介紹自己」、「最喜歡的運動」、「我的父親」之類簡單的「個人故事」記敘文，在中文已經訓練的滾瓜爛熟的題目，就足以讓考生手足無措。因 此一旦面對英文大考，考生第一反應就是怯場。其實，以高中學生而言，英文能力絕對夠用！

在PEI，不論各年級，幾乎每一兩週就有writing的作業，包括email、thank-you note、get-well card、記敘文、廣告辭、自傳、個人故事、travel guide，甚至寫一篇虛構小說。我們發現，低年級的同學剛開始還需要靠老師輔導才能完成，到了G4、G5以後，不論是何種題材，幾乎完全難不倒這些小朋友！而國一的同學，也在作七、八週練習之後，就有全民英檢初考作文四分(滿分五分)的能力。因此，英文作文，絕對不是失分題，而是應該好好把握的得分題！

穩拿基本分的速成訣竅

以下有幾個簡單的tips可以立即讓考生打通任督二脈，穩拿基本分！

一、分出作文架構：中文作文有所謂起承轉合，英文作文同樣也有三段論。也就是 introduction（開頭），body（內容）和conclusion（結尾）。每一段都有其功能，例如，如果是看圖說故事的「地震」篇，第一段一定要寫出這個重點。開頭的 那一段，作用在「破題」，也就是寫出本文宗旨。作文的首要重點就是 「不要離 題」。如果離題太遠，即使洋洋灑灑寫了一堆，也難逃零分的命運。使用三段論可以避免離題的習慣。

二、在開頭的第一段，一定要出現所謂的topic sentence，也就是破題句。例如，假設題目是「我最喜歡的運動」，一定要topic sentence就要指出我最喜歡的運動是什麼。不可以拖到第二段、甚至文章中間才開始珊珊寫出是什麼，那麼想必文章已經離題甚遠，分數也已經扣的差不多了。

三、前後呼應：文章的三段論並不是要考生寫三段互不相干的文字。這三段必須緊緊相扣。例如「我最喜歡的運動」，第一段破題之後（假設是籃球），第二段緊接著就要 說明我喜歡籃球的理由，例如它的節奏很快、和同伴打球的樂趣等等，可以舉一些豐功偉績，甚至可以來一段小故事，來豐富文章內容。通常考生敗在此處的問題都 是「貧乏」。談不出幾句話就想草草了事快點結尾了，因此在這部分要訓練的是如何「言之有物」。平日要常作思想練習，例如寫日記、心得感想，都有助於快速建 構自己的思想。至於結尾段，同樣，要再次呼應題目，可以再次強調，加一兩句感想，作一個完美的總結。

掌握基本的三段論，寫了足夠的字數，通常已經有了基本分五到十分。剩下的就是所謂的文法、修辭、句構練習。但在這個不敗的基礎上，要想再錦上添花，就如同在蛋糕上加奶油，是比較輕鬆容易的事情。這樣看來，英文作文怎麼還會難呢？

竹林中學的英文資優班要加考英文寫作與翻譯, 這樣的測驗對一般國內國、高中同學就已經具備一定難度，更不要說對國小畢業同學的挑戰性。

南山中學的數資班則需要在各科都要有傑出的表現才能勝出。

On March 17th, the students were introduced to their new software friend, Siri. Currently available on the iPhone 4S as a personal assistant and search-tool, Siri must be spoken to in clear English in order to respond to commands. Typically, these involve things like making appointments, writing notes and messages, and searching for answers on the web without having to type. We focused on the latter during class time, with each class being divided into two groups in a friendly competition using a task list worksheet as their guide.

搶在蘋果電腦尚未推出 Siri 中文版之前, 我們特別設計了ㄧ堂課要中學部的同學們, 試試用英文駕馭這套會令人上癮的軟體. 藉由 Vitural Scavenger Hunt (虛擬尋寶)的活動, 老師要求學生捉隊對抗, 在限定的時間內向Siri拷問出問題的答案.

Virtual Scavenger Hunt

During this virtual scavenger hunt, the students had to ask Siri questions from six categories: definitions, translations, famous people, cities and states in the Untied States, measurement conversions, and stock prices. For this class, using correct grammar was only half the battle, with the more difficult half being pronunciation.

“Do You Love Me?"

Siri is known for having trouble even with some native English accents, the Boston accent’s peculiar “-ar” sound and the American South’s drawl being two examples. In order to be understood, the students had to annunciate each word clearly, loudly…and sometimes very patiently. When Siri gets confused she can produce some bizarre results. She was also on the receiving end of some unexpected comments with one student asking, or perhaps pleading, “Do you love me?”

Silliness aside, working with Siri was a nice relaxed moment for the students where they could focus on being heard and hearing each other speak, while learning some new things in the process.

當然, 這項活動的最主要目的是讓同學們能在進入21世紀之後, 第一手接觸到AI人工智慧在生活的應用可行性與範疇.  或許是受限於這軟體在口音辨識上的不盡完善, 玩著玩著竟然有同學說出 “Do You Love Me?" 向 Siri 表達愛慕之意! 對大多數人而言, 花不上三分鐘就能讓人迷上電腦迷個死心蹋地;  但想要讓Siri拜倒在血肉之軀之下, 她還迷迷糊糊的在狀況外, 丈二金剛摸不著頭腦的問出"How Can I Tell?"

恭喜就讀本班高階英文班的七年級溫育姍(Amanda Wen)同學，參加福和國中英文寫作比賽榮獲特優，並將在明年三月與本次入選的八、九年級學長們競爭代表學校參加新北市的決賽。

Amanda同學平日在班時即表現出絕佳的寫作天份，不論是創作短篇故事，或是處理 Argumentation (議論文) 中的評論，都能信手捻來，駕馭自如。
