自然發音的學習之所以蔚然成風，在於它能讓孩子更流暢地進入閱讀的世界。 但我們知道英文單字最麻煩的部分就是它的字音對應並不完美。 初學者所接觸的單字，大多還沒有到非強記不可的階段。大致上他們所遇到的單字，都還可以依字音對應關係的方法拼寫出來。 而在我們接觸過的孩子中，為數不少具備基本字音對應概念；但卻嚴重缺乏「blend」(混合), 「segment」(分解)的能力。這些孩子可能已經接觸英文二到四年之久了。 我們發現在許多字首字尾、頭韻(onset)以及韻腳(rime)，和韻文的練習後，對於孩子的拼寫能力的確能有相當程度的提昇。 配合圖像記憶思考，手眼協調的遊戲設計，能夠讓孩子除了分辨讀音差異之外，更能輕鬆記憶。 有些孩子學ow, ou, oa這些相關字時，常將「count」, 寫成 「cownt」，除了多寫幾遍之外，老師在教學上若能事先預做分類及遊戲上配合的準備，及讀音上的特別區隔，孩子可以更快地進入運用的層次。
